What is SnowNet?

SnowNet is research project focusing on determining the best way to measure winter precipitation in the Arctic. Because of low temperatures, high winds, and rigorous conditions, measuring winter precipitation has proven difficult. At SnowNet, we are employing multiple methods, and we will use the results to identify the best mix of methods.

What is the concept?

The arctic winter water balance is the result of 4 processes: 1) precipitation, 2) sublimation, 3) wind transport, and 4) snow accumulation on the ground. Each of these is measured in different ways, and with different errors. At SnowNet, we are measuring all of the terms at one site., then using all of them to compute the water balance. Two sites (Barrow and Imnavait) are currently on-line.
